Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
