Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australian ODI Team Versus Team India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, as high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a surprise inclusion.

Recent Form Lead to Exclusion

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI team after managing only a single run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.

Labuschagne has played 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test recall in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

There have been indications of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia look for a solution to their opening batting issues.

Bowling Returns and Injury Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Schedule

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
